Yosei will attempt to overcome her aversion to Flemington Racecourse when she lines up for the Let’s Elope Stakes at the track this Saturday.

The five-year-old has never managed to win a race at Flemington, with her best result being a third placing in the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes as a three-year-old.

Despite her less than impressive record at the course, trainer Stuart Webb is hopeful that this Saturday will be a different story.

Webb was excited by Yosei’s trial of August 27, where she finished a gallant third behind Speediness and Shanghai Warrior.

“That was a pretty good effort in the trial to stick with some speedy horses like those two,” Webb said.

“She was taking ground off Shanghai Warrior, so it was a very encouraging effort.”

Not only will Yosei have to contend with Flemington Racecourse this weekend, she will also have to cope with the hefty weight of 58.5 kilograms she has been allocated for the Let’s Elope Stakes.

“She’s only small and as a result she’s never carried weight well,” Webb said.

“And for some reason she’s probably not at her best at Flemington either.”

Yosei finished tenth of 12 runners in her first-up run in the Listed Cockram Stakes at Caulfield last start.

Prior to that, she placed third in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile behind More Joyous and Shoot Out.

While Webb attributes a portion of her Doncaster success to her low weight allocation, he still is confident she can impress in Melbourne this weekend.

“She only had 52 kilograms in the Doncaster, that’s the sort of weight that gives her a chance these days,” Webb said.

“But I still expect her to run well at Flemington – I’d be disappointed if she didn’t after her good trial.”

Yosei has won four of her 25 race starts and has earned more than $1.13 million in prize money.
