Sydney mare Streama showed her versatility by leading all the way in taking out the Group 2 $220,000 Yellowglen Tristarc Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield today.

Streama was having her third run back from a spell stepping up to 1400m and Hugh Bowman had no concerns about crossing from the outside barrier and setting the pace in the field of top quality mares.

Bowman was at his best and while he let the rest of the field attack him at the top of the straight, he knew he had plenty in reserve and when asked for her final effort Streama responded and drew away to score a comfortable one and a quarter lengths win.

Pear Tart with Christian Reith finished strongly to run second with Red Tracer running on from back in the field for third.

Even though Stream won the 2400m Group 1 $550,000 Patinack Farm Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick on April 21, trainer Guy Walter believes that 1600m is the mare’s best distance and will be heading to the Group 1 $500,000 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on Derby Day.

“Great to see that she can show the Melbourne people what she can do,” Walter said.

“She’s won coming off the pace and won leading or sharing the lead as an early three year old. She was a little bit outpaced last start over 1200m.”

“We didn’t really go out with the intention of leading, but obviously from that gate you have to have an open mind and Hughie rode her superbly and she’s a great little mare and hope she can go onto the Myer.”

“She can run on wet or dry and she can come from behind or she can lead.”

Local mare Mosheen was sent out the $3.10 favourite and after ranging up half way down the straight and looking as though she was going to make it back to back wins was unable to match it with Streama and faded to finish sixth.

Tatts Tiara winner Pear Tart and Red Tracer showed they were also on track for the Myer Classic with strong finishes and a wet surface would help both of their chances at Flemington.
