The Golden Slipper form looks the one to follow to Royal Randwick this weekend with the best out of the world’s richest race for two-year-olds backing-up in the Group 1 Inglis Sires’ (1400m) heading the markets on the second leg of the 2YO Triple Crown.

The James Cummings-trained Cylinder was brave last start when second to Shinzo in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), and the progressive Exceed And Excel colt is now clear top elect in Inglis Sires’ betting paying $2.60 through Ladbrokes for Saturday.

The $1 million showdown is one of four Group 1 Randwick races run on Day 1 of The Championships and features a quality field of 13 juveniles this autumn.

Cylinder drew a treat in gate four with ace Sydney-based hoop James McDonald retaining the ride looking for his second Inglis Sires’ success in three years following his 2021 victory aboard Anamoe.

Prior to the Golden Slipper Cylinder was good winning the Group 2 Silver Slipper (1100m) – Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) double.

He is now tipped to return to winning form getting out over 1400m fourth-up and fit this weekend.

Cummings has won two of the past four editions of the Inglis Sires’.

With an even better strike-rate in the event having prepared five past Inglis Sires’ winners is Peter Snowden.

His latest success in partnership with son Paul was King’s Legacy in 2020.

This year the Snowdens saddle-up the two key dangers with Golden Slipper fourth place-getter Don Corleone ($4.80) and the progressive Empire Of Japan ($9) drawn barriers two and 11 respectively.

Well-bred Extreme Choice colt Don Corleone has been one of the quickest to rise through the ranks following his successful debut at Randwick only back in late January.

Two back he was runner-up to Little Brose in Melbourne’s Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) before his Slipper fourth that he is out to improve on here over further.

Empire Of Japan is also being kept safe in betting after an eye-catching fifth in the Golden Slipper at 80/1 last time out.

He looks one that will enjoy the extra furlong in the Sires’ with Zac Purton down under for the ride from gate 11.

Others at a current quote of $9 for the win are Tony & Calvin McEvoy’s undefeated Grunt colt Veight coming off a Group 2 VRC Sires’ win in Melbourne at just his second start and Brave Mead.

Veight was huge on debut at Pakenham in early February winning a maiden by a runway six lengths before his easy two-length VRC Sires’ victory on March 11.

He now looks to remain unbeaten heading north for his acid test in the ATC Sires’ proven at the distance and a genuine winning chance according to co-trainer Calvin McEvoy.

“We were very confident leading into the VRC Sires and we were already planning for this race because that was the confidence we had in the horse,” McEvoy told Racenet this week.

“He managed to get the job done and he was impressive in doing it so since that day, it has been all systems go towards this race.

“He’s worked the reverse way every day and he’s taken to that very well.

“The Turf Club here at Ballarat have been very accommodating, letting us gallop the reverse way and he did that on the course proper this morning.”

Brave Smash colt Brave Mead meanwhile is prepared by leading trainers Ciaron Maher & David Eustace out of Ballarat and comes off back-to-back 1200m wins in easier grade by a combined winning margin of over seven lengths.
