Graeme and Debbie Rogerson’s Scarlett Lady has made a big impression in her first Australian race start by winning the Group 3 The Roses at Doomben Racecourse.

The three-year-old filly put in a fantastic run to come from midfield to win the race by a head in front of Savannah’s Choice and race favourite Divorces.

Scarlett Lady has now won all five of her races so far this preparation and has added to the numerous wins from international runners in the winter carnival.

The Savabeel filly was ridden by New Zealand apprentice jockey James McDonald, who was impressed with the horse could continue her winning streak against such a high-class field.

“To come over here and do it again against these good fillies is very exciting,” McDonald said.

The jockey believes that Scarlett Lady will be perfectly suited to the 2,400 metre distance of her next assignment in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks.

“No worries at all,” McDonald said.

“Every start she takes me the length of the straight to pull her up.”

Co-trainer Debbie Rogerson was pleased with McDonald’s ride on Scarlett Lady.

“He rode her a treat,” she said.

The trainer said that despite the fact they only arrived in Australia a few days ago, they were always confident that Scarlett Lady was going to produce a win.

“It took us 24 hours to get here and we only got here on Wednesday,” Ms Rogerson said.

“We were pretty confident going into today.”

Scarlett Lady will now focus on getting ready for the Oaks, which will take place on June 4 at Eagle Farm.

“The Oaks is the main issue,” Ms Rogerson said.

The Rogerson training team have also brought across early Queensland Derby favourite Shootoff to compete in the $500,000 Doomben Cup later today.

“Hopefully it keeps getting better,” Ms Rogerson said.
