Queensland Cup Trip A Query For The Inventor

Veteran trainer Bevan Laming has set The Inventor for the 2014 Queensland Cup, but he admits that he is unsure whether the last start winner will be able to run out a strong 3200 metres in the Listed event at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

The Inventor stamped himself as a leading contender for the Queensland Cup with back-to-back wins in the Queensland Times Provincial Cup (2150m) at Ipswich on June 14 and the Group 3 Tatt’s Cup (2200m) at Eagle Farm on June 21, but he will be stepping up to two miles for the first time in his racing career.

“I don’t know how he will go,” Laming told Racing Queensland.

“He’s got to run two miles, but there’s not much stamina there on his dam’s side.

“His mother mostly raced over 1200 and 1400 metres, but on the positive side most of the Danasinga breed can stay.

“I’m hopeful he’ll stay and run well.”

Laming has previously won the Brisbane Cup on three occasions, taking out the race with Desert Chill in 1995 and 1997 and Crossthestart in 2010, and is considered one of the leading trainers of stayers in Queensland, but he has never previously had a runner in the Brisbane Cup.

The Jacobs Well-based trainer said that he would love to win the Queensland Cup for the first time, but admits that The Inventor will need to perform well to be a winning chance against the likes of Brayroan and Astro Avalanche in the Listed event.

“Brayroan is easily the one to beat; he won well at Caloundra and he’s by Zabeel so he’ll definitely run the trip,” Laming said.

“I don’t think I’ve ever had a runner in this race before,” he said.

“The Queensland Cup used to be run in November before it was switched to this time of the year a few years ago.

“It’s definitely the right time of the year to run it now, it was too hot in November.”

Laming is yet to decide on any future plans with The Inventor, but he will consider a shot at the 2015 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) with the Danasinga gelding, if he shows that he is capable of running out a strong two miles.

The Inventor is currently on the fourth line of 2014 Queensland Cup betting markets at a quote of $8.50; with Brayroan ($4) a narrow favourite from Astro Avalanche ($4.40) and Pop ‘N’ Scotch ($6).
