New Zealand trainer Lisa Latta has shelved plans to take Caloundra Cup winner Zennista home and will chase more stakes success in Australia in the coming weeks.

Latta is still weighing up her options with the staying mare but said she is leaning towards Thursday week’s Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) rather than a seven-day back-up into this Saturday’s Listed Queensland Cup (3200m) at Eagle Farm.

‘‘We’ll leave her over there and give her another opportunity while she’s going so well,’’ Latta told New Zealand’s the Waikato Times.

The Caloundra victory was a long time coming for the five-year-old who had been racing well without finding her way into the winner’s stall at Brisbane’s winter carnival.

But some tough lead-up runs, including a third-place finish in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup, provided the perfect grounding for the Sunshine Coast feature as she passed the line unchallenged 2 1/2 lengths clear from Voila Ici and Rothera.

Damian Browne gave the daughter of Zenno Rob Roy the run of the race behind the leaders before bringing her to the front turning for home. From there she was simply in a league of her own on a favourable heavy track.

The win was Zennista’s fourth at stakes level but her first in Australia and took her overall career record to seven wins from 33 starts.

While Latta admits the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups are probably races beyond her ability, she is still hoping to return to Australia to chase the spring riches in Melbourne.

‘‘There are plenty of good races for her in Melbourne without  having to worry about any of the big Cup races,’’ Latta said.

Latta indicated the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) in November loomed as an ideal spring target.

It has been a successful winter in Australia for Latta who also prepared three-year-old Platinum Kingdom to win at Listed level in Sydney and the Group 3 Fred Best Classic in Brisbane.
