Late Entries Add Further Class to Caulfield Cup

A further international element was added to this year’s Caulfield Cup today with Tony McEvoy’s French import Sysmo joining Americain’s stablemate Reliable Man as the only late entries for the $2.5 million event.

Their inclusion in nominations takes the number of total entries for the prestigious staying contest to 222.

While Reliable Man’s inclusion as a Caulfield Cup hope was revealed last week, the news of Sysmo’s nomination only became known today.

A son of My Risk, the four-year-old first raced for McEvoy in February when winning on debut at Morphetville Parks.

He had only one further start in his initial Australian campaign, a sixth at Morphetville, before returning with an eye-catching run earlier this month when fifth in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m).

In his first stakes test in Australia, the Adelaide-based import came from near last to finish fifth in an 11-horse field at Flemington.

Reliable Man, one of the best three-year-olds in France in 2011, has produced solid results this year.

The son of Dalakhani finished third at Group 1 level in France in April and delivered consecutive fourth-place finishes in the top grade in the UK in June and July.

Trained by Alain De Royer Dupre, Reliable Man was four lengths behind So You Think in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes and improved next start to finish within two lengths of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Danedream.

Both Sysmo and Reliable man have also been nominated for the Cox Plate which will be held at Moonee Valley on October 27.
