Jockey Glen Boss admits that he is not sure whether Late Charge is good enough to win the 2014 Toorak Handicap, but he believes that the tough entire will give himself every possible chance to record a maiden win at Group 1 level at Caulfield tomorrow.

Late Charge started his 2014 Spring Racing Carnival campaign with a narrow win in the Hocking Stuart Handicap (1200m) at Caulfield on August 30 before he recorded a maiden black type win in the Listed The Sofitel (1400m) at Flemington on September 13.

The son of Hard Spun returned to Group 1 level in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on September and hit the line fairly to finish a credible sixth behind Trust In A Gust.

Boss told Racing Ahead this morning that he had been impressed with the effort of Late Charge when he was ridden by Daniel Moor in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and he is confident that the four-year-old will produce a typically brave performance in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap tomorrow.

“I thought that he was really good,” Boss said.

“It was no fault of Daniel’s, he got him into a good spot, but I saw that he got really strong for Daniel for two or three furlongs and he looked to have every possible hope, but he looked to be doing a lot within himself in the middle section of that race.

“He probably looked a little plain late, but was still trying to the line and if you go back through this horses form he is a real trier.

“I know that his stats over a mile aren’t good, but I have had a look at all of his mile runs and there have been a few excuses.

“He is going put himself in a position tomorrow and it looks to be a good pressure race with plenty of tempo there.

“He will put himself in the right spot.

“Whether he is good enough to be beating some really good horses that are in great form, like Arabian Gold and Trust In A Gust, that is the question, but he will give himself every possible chance.”

Late Charge is currently available at 2014 Toorak Handicap odds of $17, while Trust In A Gust ($5.50) is now a narrow favourite from Bull Point ($6) and Arabian Gold ($6).

Boss is chasing his third win in the Toorak Handicap after winning on Show A Heart in 2001 and Shot Of Thunder in 2002.
