Classy filly Guelph led from start to finish in the Thousand Guineas to win her fourth Group 1 race  (1600m) at Caulfield this afternoon in typically impressive fashion.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy took Guelph straight to the front of the field and dictated the pace of the race before letting the daughter of Exceed And Excel down at the 300 metre mark.

Darren Weir-trained May’s Dream loomed as the danger and made up ground but Guelph pulled well clear to record a one and a half lengths victory running away from the rest of the field at the line.

Trainer Peter Snowden was celebrating his third Group 1 win in five days, after winning the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) with Complacent and the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) with Long John on Saturday, and confirmed that the plan going into the race was for McEvoy to lead on the champion filly.

“It wasn’t the way that we wanted to ride but we thought that there was no other option,” Snowden said.

“We know that she is dominant over a mile, she runs it true, and there were a lot of fillies in that race that had never run over a mile before so we made her own.

“She is a very good filly, she has a great attitude to go with it, and when that second horse came to her she kicked.

“She just has that quality where she can keep finding.”

Snowden announced yesterday that Long John would push on to the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in just over a weeks’ time but the Darley trainer said he is yet make a decision on the racing future of the three-year-old.

“It is not my call alone it is a team decision,” Snowden said.

“I’ve made it known all along that I would like to stop with her now but the boys will have a talk and talk to the boss at home and see what his thoughts are and we will come up with the right decision.”

Kerrin McEvoy has had a big opinion of Guelph since he first rode her in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) over a year ago and said he is blessed to be able to ride such a talented filly.

“She is a dream to be around, a dream to ride and a lovely filly to ride,” McEvoy said.

“I had a few different scenarios in my head but once she began well I thought stuff it I will take the race by the scruff of the neck.”

Guelph has now recorded seven wins from eleven starts and is the first filly in history to complete the Tea Rose Stakes/Flight Stakes/Caulfield Guineas treble.
