Trainer Peter Moody is confident that Dissident will relish the step-up to a mile in the 2014 Royal Randwick Guineas on Saturday and expects the consistent colt to improve as he rises in distance during the 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
Dissident returned to the races with a second place finish behind El Roca in the Listed Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on February 15 before scoring just the second win of his career in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at the same venue on March 1.
Moody believes that Dissident has taken plenty of benefit out of his Hobartville Stakes win, but told TVN that the son of Sebring still has plenty of improvement left in front of him.
“There is a long way to go in the campaign and he took improvement off his first-up run and he will continue to take improvement off the Hobartville into Saturday,” Moody said.
“It was nice to get his nose out in front the other day and I think that the step out to a mile will really suit him here on Saturday and I think the step out to a mile and a quarter for the Rosehill Guineas will suit him even more.”
Dissident was one of the most consistent three-year-old performers during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, but was unable to record a race win in five starts.
He resumed with a second place finish behind Eurozone in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m) at Royal Randwick on August 10 and was only narrowly denied victory in both the Group 3 The Run To The Rose (1200m) and Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens.
The talented colt was far from disgraced when making his open racing debut in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick on September 21 and had no luck when fourth in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 12.
Moody is confident that Dissident can maintain his consistent record at the highest level of racing in the Royal Randwick Guineas this weekend and said that he is happy with the condition of the Hobartville Stakes winner.
“He never runs bad; he has raced at the top level and has always been there abouts,” Moody said.
“I hadn’t seen him since he raced, but I was very pleased with his condition.
“He is a big strapping sort of a colt and we have just let him work himself into fitness.”
Dissident ($8) is currently on the third line of 2014 Royal Randwick Guineas betting markets from El Roca ($4.20) and Atlante ($6.20).
