Punters’ attention turns to Melbourne on the weekend with all eyes on the James Cummings trained exciting colt Broadsiding as he heads south for a shot at the Caulfield Guineas 2024.

The son of Too Darn Hot dominates betting on this year’s Group 1 $3 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) already a proven miler with two previous elite level wins at the distance.

He is at an odds-on quote of $1.55 in the latest Caulfield Guineas markets at Ladbrokes looking for his fourth Group 1 trophy.

Broadsiding jumps from barrier nine with ace hoop James McDonald aboard in the prestigious three-year-old classic, and he comes off a win fresh – the first horse to do so first-up – in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill.

McDonald meanwhile chases his fourth winning ride in the Caulfield Guineas and second in three years following his most recent victory on Golden Mile in 2022.

Mayfair is the early Caulfield Guineas betting market mover and the potential one to deny Broadsiding according to some punters who are coming for the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Fastnet Rock colt.

The bay jumps from gate 10 with Blake Shinn retaining the ride after a lead-up third narrowly beaten at big odds in a lovely Golden Rose performance by the horse and hoop.

Prior to that Mayfair was runner-up to one of this year’s confirmed The Everest horses Storm Boy in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes and second to Lady Shenandoah – subsequent dominant winner of the Flight Stakes for the Waller stable – in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty.

Clinton McDonald‘s Angel Capital also poses as a potential threat now out to $9 and easing in the markets.

The in-form Harry Angel colt was a strong winner last time out in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude.

Despite being the traditional lead-up run into the Group 1, no horse has done the double since Helmet back in 2011.

Angel Capital however was no match for Broadsiding in Brisbane’s Group 2 Sires’ back in June so will need to display significant improvement to overcome the hot favourite.

The Waterhouse/Bott stable launches a two-pronged attack with Mayfair joined in the starting line-up by Wanaruah ($16).

Team Hayes’ Group 2 Stutt Stakes winner Evaporate ($13) looking for a fifth win on the trot from gate eight with Michael Dee riding and the Chris Waller-trained Written Tycoon colt Private Life ($15) are among the potential dark horses in this year’s Caulfield Guineas field.

The Caulfield Guineas 2024 is scheduled as Caulfield Race 8 at 4:30pm (AEDT).
