Jockey Tommy Berry is preparing to contest the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic next Saturday aboard rising favourite Driefontein at the Gold Coast.

The jockey is confident that Driefontein can live up to the last year’s winning performance by now three-year-old Karuta Queen.

Karuta Queen has since gone on to be successful in a number of races during the spring carnival, finishing second to Black Caviar in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes and winning the Group 3 Australia Stakes at her next start.

“They are different types as Karuta Queen was a flying machine whereas this filly can relax,” Berry said.

“(Driefontein) doesn’t have to lead to win but when they go as fast as she does I’d rather be in front in the Millions than travelling behind green horses.”

Berry is set to arrive in Queensland on the morning of the Magic Millions carnival after first riding in Western Australia and Sydney over the next 10 days.

The jockey will be in Western Australia on a working holiday, where he will have just a few rides in order to keep his fitness levels up for the Magic Millions.

“There is no need for me to be (at the Gold Coast) any earlier,” he said.

“Gai (Waterhouse) has the right people with her in Brisbane and I don’t need to be at the Gold Coast early as I have ridden there and know the track.”

Driefontein has won both of her previous two race starts, including her most recent start in the Group 3 McLachlan Stakes at Doomben on December 31, 2011.

The two-year-old filly was purchased for $75,000 from the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2011 and has now won close to $140,000 in prize money.
