Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young’s mare Sierra Sue became a dual Group 1 winner at Caulfield on Saturday with an impressive weight-for-age win in the time-honoured Futurity Stakes.

The Kiwi import went around at double figures in a field made up of last fortnight’s C.F. Orr Stakes winner Tofane, two-time Group 1 winner Mo’unga, and one of the stars of the spring, I’m Thunderstruck.

Punters that took the $11.00 on offer were left grinning as Sierra Sue put paid to the small field of eight after setting up shop fourth along the rails in the early stages.

The well-supported Turaath led for most of the way before tiring late, right before Tofane loomed out wide in search of her fourth Group 1.

Sierra Sue was strongest to the line though, in large part thanks to a well-timed run from John Allen.

The five-year-old was seen doing her best work late first-up in the Orr, and her improvement was on full display when she bolted in late with 100m to spare.

Sierra Sue’s record at Caulfield also read well with two wins from five starts heading in, one coming over the track and trip in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes during the spring.

With two Group 1’s now on the resume, the Busuttin and Young stable could have bigger things in mind with the All-Star Mile less than a month away.

“I think she’s the sixth emergency for an All-Star Mile, so we have to give it plenty of thought,” Young told racing.com.

“I do think she’s better at the 1400m, I think she’s a lot more effective, but she has won up to 1700m.

“We could take her back to Flemington or keep her for Adelaide in the Robert Sangster Stakes and freshen her up.”

Sierra Sue can be found at $15 in Ladbrokes’ All-In 2022 All-Star Mile market.

Mo’unga, meanwhile, ran an eye-catching second after settling well back in the field, while Tofane was far from disgraced running third.
