Gold Coast apprentice Janette Johnson gets her chance to win her first Stakes race after trainer Bryan Guy stuck with the 3kg claimer on Regular in the Listed $175,000 City Of Ipswich Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) at Ipswich on Saturday.

Johnson is the regular rider for the four year old and Guy could see no reason to take her off in the non-claiming race after she partnered him to a nose win in the BenchMark 90 Handicap over 1350m at Doomben on May 24.

From sixteen rides on Regular, Johnson has won four times and Guy expects the pair to be hard to beat in the Eye Liner Stakes.

“Janette has ridden him in four of his six wins. He is a tricky horse to ride but he also goes well for her so why not stay with a winning combination,” Guy told AAP.

Guy has also engaged the apprentice for Dienekes in the Listed $175,000 Channel 7 Ipswich Cup (2150m), also a non-claiming race, after the pair were narrowly beaten by Southerly over 1800m in a BenchMark 90 Handicap at Eagle Farm on May 31.

“I would love to get a stakes win for her,’’ Guy said.

“She rode Dienekes into third in the Magic Millions Cup and she’s had 16 rides on Regular and collected 16 cheques, so both of them go well for her.

“If she could win one of these, it would give her a real boost because she can still claim 3kg in town.’’

Regular will be stepping up to Open company for the first time but after some good restricted class form has been marked a $11 chance with Ladbrokes.com.au.

Prior to their last start win, Regular and Johnson were in the runner’s up stall in Class 6 grade over 1200m at Eagle Farm on April 26 and over 1100m at the Gold Coast on May 10.

Black Cash from the Kelly Doughy stable holds a slight margin at $4.80 over the Chris Waller trained Masthead ($5) who heads to Ipswich after running a close second to Sacred Star in the Group 2 $175,000 Magic Millions QTC Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm on May 31.

Next in the betting is the Kelso Wood trained Into The Red at $7 just ahead of the top weight Alma’s Fury at $9.
