Classy filly Jazz Song is a chance of making her Group 1 debut in the 2014 Tattersall’s Tiara at Eagle Farm on Saturday after taking out the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) at Ipswich on Saturday.

Jazz Song started the Gai Waterhouse Classic as a narrow favourite from the in-form Griante and it was the two leading contenders that cleared away from the rest of the field to fight out the finish at the 300 metre mark.

Griante had gone straight to the lead in the early stages of the Gai Waterhouse Classic and she battled home bravely, but Jazz Song was too strong in the final 50 metres and claimed the third win of her racing career to date.

Jockey Jim Byrne was riding Jazz Song in a race for the first time in the Gai Waterhouse Classic and the veteran hoop revealed after the race that he had always planned to position the Fastnet Rock filly closer to the speed than she had been in her previous starts during the 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

I had pace drawn to my inside and to the outside so I knew if I was a bit slow away I was going to be in trouble,” Byrne told the media after the race

“I knew if Dunny (Dwayne Dunn who rode Griante) got a soft lead, he was going to be hard to beat so I was conscious of getting going.

“My mare takes a little while to wind up but she really hits the line and that’s what she did.”

Trainer Mick Price is currently in Malaysia and wasn’t on hand to see Jazz Song win the Gai Waterhouse Classic, but is considering backing-up the blue blood filly in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) on Saturday depending on how well she recovers in the next 48 hours.

Jazz Song stamped herself as a filly to watch when she scored an upset win in the Group 3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on February 21 and she performed well in two starts in Adelaide including a second place finish behind Miracles Of Life in the Group 2 Euclase Stakes (1200m).

The three-year-old started her 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival campaign with a fifth place finish behind Srikandi in the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) at Doomben on May 24 before finishing within half a length of the winner in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) at Eagle Farm on May 31.
