The four-year-old mare will target the Gai Waterhouse Classic at Ipswich this Saturday in an attempt to extend her winning streak.

Gai’s Choice has won six of her 23 race starts to date and has earned close to $300,000 in prize money.

Trainer David Pfieffer wasn’t convinced Gai’s Choice would have much of a future in racing after failing to win any of her ten runs last preparation.

The General Nediym mare won her most recent start by an impressive six lengths, giving Pfieffer the confirmation he needed that she could take the next step back up to Listed level.

“Off the back of past preparation, I told the owner she might be finished,” the trainer said bluntly.

“I said we would give her a couple of runs and if she can show us something, we will determine her career.

“First up they went helter skelter in front and she came down that beautiful path on the outside where every horse was winning.

“Second up, I thought she would win, but I didn’t expect her to win that easily.

“They clapped the speed on for her and that’s what she wants. To win by six lengths it was obviously a much-improved performance on her last preparation.”

The trainer has always had the Gai Waterhouse Classic in mind for Gai’s Choice and feels she will be right in the finish for the $100,000 race.

“The Gai Waterhouse was always a race I had an eye on because she wants 1300-1400m, a really good speed and it has some black type,” he said.

“If she puts together what she has in her last two starts into Saturday, you would like to think she will be very effective.”
