Ferraris Says He Can Be A Straight Up Hero

In a year when the internationals are flooding across in record numbers, Bear Hero is probably the forgotten horse in all the commotion.

The reason for this is pretty much exclusively the fact he’s not here for the Melbourne Cup, the job of Bear Hero is to upstage Sepoy in the 2011 Coolmore Stud Stakes.

It’s a big call from trainer David Ferraris to make the trip from Hong Kong to Melbourne, after all the horse has had just the four starts in his career.

That being said he has been impressive, as a two year old he was unbeaten in three trips up the 1000m straight at Sha Tin.

That’s what looks like being his trump card here too, many believe Sepoy is vulnerable in a straight line and if there’s a specialist in the race there’s no doubt it’s Bear Hero.

He’s only lost the one career start, that was when running second across 1200m in September, his first time around a bend.

There’s no doubt they see some real quality in this three year old and Ferraris is confident of success in his hit and run Australian mission.

“I couldn’t be happier with his prep, his final sprint up this morning was excellent,” he said.

“I think he’ll run a very big race on Saturday.”

He said while the attraction of a big Group 1 was a factor in coming here, so too was the fact he had limited options back home.

“Being a three year old he doesn’t get that many opportunities in Hong Kong, they’re all handicaps he said.

“We think he’s a really top horse, a bit of black type won’t do him any harm.”

He also has no concerns about the big gap between runs and a recent Flemington jumpout shows he’s on track for a big performance.

“That was a very good jumpout he won it well, fats time with some decent horses behind him,” he said.

“He hadn’t raced for five or six weeks, he really needed that gallop.”

Bear Hero is somewhat unfancied in the Coolmore Stakes betting markets but Ferraris says if there’s a horse to beat Sepoy it’s his and if there’s a race to do it in it’s this Saturday.

“He races just off the speed, he’s unbeaten up the straight,” he said.

“I know we’ve got a really tough one to beat in Sepoy but If there’s a chink in his armour I think Bear Hero might be the horse to do it.”
