Racegoers won’t see Star Of Universe at the Sydney Autumn Carnival, but trainer James Thompson has no intention of calling a halt to the thirteen-year-old gelding’s racing career.

The Gulgong trainer said that there is still plenty of racing left in Star Of Universe’s legs after the old timer scored his nineteenth win at his one hundred and seventy-fourth race start over 2050m at Gunnedah on Monday.

“Why would I stop him from doing what he loves?” Thompson told The Daily Telegraph.

`And while he can keep winning races like he did on Monday, I’m happy to keep him going.

`He’s cranky, but he’s also intelligent – he’s got more brains than the bloke who trains him and the jockeys who ride him.”

Star Of Universe was coming off a seventh over 2100m at Orange on December 29 and was unwanted in the betting and was sent out at the juicy odds of $26 with the best tote paying out at $47.

Star Of Universe holds the title of the oldest horse racing in New South Wales and Racing New South Wales vet Craig Suann said that there is no rule to prevent the veteran from starting again as long as he passes the vet’s test before each race starts.

Under the Australian racing rules, any horse over twelve years of age has to be vetted before being allowed to take part in a race.

Star Of Universe made his racetrack debut back in 2003 when he finished seventh in a maiden at Gilgandra and the Sky Chase gelding took fourteen starts before he won his first race at Narromine in May 2005.

Star Of Universe’s record of nineteen wins, twenty-one seconds and twenty-two thirds on the New South Wales country circuit has earned the Thompson family $147,745 in prizemoney.
