Trainer John O’Shea will give consideration to running Spectroscope in next week’s Doncaster Mile after the French import scored an impressive win in the Group 3 $150,000 Rydges Parramatta Doncaster Prelude (1500m) at Rosehill today.

Spectroscope is only handicapped with 50kg for the Group 1 $3m The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on day one of ‘The Championships’ and O’Shea is leaning towards heading there if the four year old does okay in the stable during the week.

“If he happens to have a good week we will probably give consideration of doing that,” O’Shea said.

“We think he is quite a nice horse and we think he is up to the top level, particularly in Australia. He has really enjoyed his time here and we will see how he pulls up but there is an opportunity for us now to run him in the Doncaster with no weight.”

Spectroscope was only having his second race start in Australia today and made it two wins from two starts after English jockey William Buick rode him to victory in a 1350m BenchMark 89 Handicap at Rosehill on March 11.

“William Buick gave him a hell of a rapt last week and when William speaks we tend to listen and his assessment was spot on,” O’Shea said.

Winning jockey Corey Brown settled Spectroscope ($3,20 favourite) at the tail of the field and rode him for luck in the straight and found it when the four year old squeezed in between runners to be dominant at the finished to record a one length win over No Doubt ($15) and the Chris Waller trained Marenostro ($10).

“We had to ride him like that, there is no point in circumnavigating them today. He just rode him exactly as we wanted it done and he hasn’t had a hard run as well,” O’Shea said.

“He is a seasoned campaigner Corey and we have had a lot of faith with whatever decision he made in the run and it worked out in our favour.”
