A dominant win at Rosehill on Monday has Big Bonanza on track to fulfill a long-range goal for Wyong trainer Donn Robb in Wednesday week’s Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) at Grafton.

Robb set the five-year-old for the country feature sprint five months ago and believes is ready to peak in his “grand final.”

By Stratum from Gold, Big Bonanza was untouchable in a Benchmark 85 handicap (1200m) at Rosehill, leading from start to finish to cross the line three lengths clear of Bardiya and Radar.

Robb said the wet weather that has hit New South Wales meant the gelding missed plenty of work in the lead-up to the race so he is expecting him to improve again in Grafton.

“He has missed two trials and a fair bit of work leading in to this so there is still good improvement in him,” Robb told TVN.

“I’ve always thought he was good enough to be competitive in a Ramornie and I’m looking forward to it.”

Big Bonanza has raced just once at stakes level, finishing eighth in the June Stakes last month, but has been a consistent earner for connections.

From 28 trips to the races he has won nine times and placed another six, collecting nearly $300,000 in prizemoney.

In Grafton he will be ridden by Peter Robl and will face a showdown with defending champion Howmuchdoyouloveme who was a convincing all-the-way winner last year.

The robust front-runner made a stunning return to form at Brisbane’s winter carnival, putting together back-to-back wins in the Listed Lightning Handicap and the Group 3 Healy Stakes.
