Talented colt Proisir kept his unbeaten record alive in Newcastle today, taking out the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m) in dominant style.

The money flowed for the Gai Waterhouse-trained three-year-old prior to the race and he justified his short price as he scored a six-length victory ahead of Trophies and Proverb.

After jumping well from the inside barrier, star jockey Nash Rawiller elected to lead with the son of Choisir and he held him at least half a length in front of the field for the majority of the trip before allowing him to explode with 250 metres to go.

From that moment on Proisir showed his was a class above as he found an extra gear in what was his first race at stakes level.

Waterhouse was full of typical praise for the horse who is being targeted at next month’s Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick.

“He could win the Spring Champion. This is always a great race and a great indicator of good horses,” Waterhouse told Sky World.

“He just toyed with his rivals today, just toyed with them. He won like the short-priced favourite he was.

“It was just so exciting, I got goosebumps after that.”

Rawiller, who scored his third winning ride of the day on the promising colt, also expressed excitement about Proisir’s spring prospects.

“I think he’s a very promising horse. He really took the next step today with flying colours,” Rawiller said.

“He made his own luck…he travelled comfortably there in front.

“What was his impressive was his last furlong, he just quickened really well.”
