Pressing To Run In BRC Sires Produce Stakes

Trainer Mick Price has confirmed that undefeated colt Pressing will contest the 2014 BRC Sires Produce Stakes at Doomben next weekend before making his Group 1 debut in the J.J. Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm on June 7.

Pressing and stablemate Jazz Song arrived in Brisbane this morning after departing from their Caulfield stable last night and Price told Sky Racing HQ that the pair had no problems from the trip to Queensland.

“They are both good,” Price said.

“They worked here on the heavy ground on Saturday morning the reverse way and that was good for them.

“They both handled that well and handled the ground well.

“They got picked up from Caulfield at 11 o’clock last night and they arrived at Tony Gollan’s about five o’clock this morning and it was a very good, quick, clean trip for the horses.”

Pressing made his racing debut with an impressive win from towards the tail of the field in the Mindy Green Plate (1200m) at Caulfield on April 12 and stamped himself as a leading contender for the Group 1 J.J. Atkins with a dominant three and a half lengths win in the Listed Sky High Mt Dandenong Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on May 3.

Price said that he is wary of over racing Pressing in his maiden racing campaign, but is confident that the Sebring colt can perform well in the Group 2 BRC Sires Produce Stakes (1350m) at Doomben on May 24 and press on to the J.J. Atkins over a mile a fortnight later.

“I am conscious that he has had two runs here and he has gone up there pretty fit,” Price said.

“In the back of your mind, you are hoping that they thrive up there because they go into the Sires at Doomben reverse way and it is a new environment.

“If he races well, he will race in the J.J. Atkins, but if we think that he has done enough we can always spell him up there.

“He is a robust little colt and he is tough.

“As long as he does well and thrives up there he will have those two runs.”

Pressing ($6.50) is currently on the third line of 2014 J.J. Atkins betting markets; with Champagne Classic winner Brazen Beau ($3) a clear favourite from Tony Gollan-trained Looks Like The Cat ($6).
