Premier’s Cup to Brisbane Cup for Precedence

A flashing win in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2200m) at Doomben today has Bart Cummings-trained veteran Precedence on track for the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm in two weeks time.

The seven-year-old gelding was having his 50th start but showed he still has plenty of zest for racing to storm down the outside ahead of Less Is More and Zennista.

Often a source of frustration for punters, the son of Zabeel flew under the radar as a $17 chance.

Jockey Hugh Bowman was left impressed by the barnstorming run and had no hesitations about declaring him a genuine Brisbane Cup contender.

“He was favourite for the Melbourne Cup once this horse so he’s got a touch of class,” Bowman said.

“We might have ourselves a Brisbane Cup winner. Let’s hope he can reproduce that run because that was an excellent peformance.

“I just settled him where he was comfortable…I had a beautiful run and when the pressure went on I just pulled him out, balanced him and he did it for me.”

Stable representative Reg Fleming said today’s victory was part of a long-range plan after a promising third in the Group 2 Zipping Classic in November.

“After he ran third at Sandown that was the plan. To give him a good break and bring him to Brisbane for these races,” Fleming said.

“He’s a gentleman. He’s the soundest horse we’ve probably ever had in the 18 years I’ve been at Bart’s.”

Well-backed favourite Midsummer Sun finished 6 1/2 lengths off the winner in 13th position.
