2013 Golden Slipper winner Overreach did not make it to the races during the  Spring Racing Carnival but impressed with a dominant barrier trial victory over 728 metres at Royal Randwick this morning.

Overreach jumped from the gates well and shot to the front of the field before cruising to comfortable three lengths victory from Team Cummings-trained Brook Road and stablemate Suadela, despite being kept under a heavy hold by jockey Tommy Berry.

The daughter of Exceed And Excel was one of the juvenile stars of the 2013 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, winning the Listed Widden Stakes (1100m), Group 2 Moet & Chandon Stakes (1200m) and the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), but trainer Gai Waterhouse elected not to run the filly in the spring.

Overreach was the clear favourite for the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) at the start of the racing season but was upset in a barrier trial by stablemate Marseille Roulette at Royal Randwick on August 19 and was not overly impressive when beating a weak field in another trial at the same venue three weeks later.

Waterhouse made the decision to send Overreach back to the spelling paddock and let her develop further; a decision which based on the classy fillies performance today appears to have paid dividends.

Inconsistent filly Champagne Cath took part in the same barrier trial and finished fourth, more than three and a half lengths behind Overreach, after being given a quiet trial by jockey Jay Ford.

Champagne Cath went into the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival with great expectations, and was rated a leading contender for the Golden Rose by trainer Chris Waller, but was beaten as a short priced favourite in her first two stars.

The Street Sense filly failed to fire in either the National Jockeys Trust Handicap (1100m) or Dooleys Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens before returning to a semblance of her best form when finishing third behind Aussies Love Sport and Open Book in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m).

Champagne Cath finished her campaign with a narrow win over More Than Faith and She’s Bella in the Reginald Allen Quality (1400m) and was sent to the spelling paddock; with Waller hopeful that she can live up to her potential during the autumn.

Neither Waterhouse nor Waller have declared what races they plan to target with their classy fillies during the 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
