Chris Munce rode five winners at Doomben yesterday in a stint that has further extended the pain of Brisbane bookies.

While Munce will be celebrating a personal best achievement the same can’t be said for people who run the boards on track.

They’ve been suffering through a glut of short priced winners over recent weeks with barely one long shot getting up on any given card.

The favourites continued to succeed yesterday as well with four of Munce’s five winners coming on horses that were expected to claim the prize.

For a man whose senior career has spanned well over a decade and across many regions this was the first time he’d cracked five at a metro meet.

“Don’t ask me when but I’ve ridden four winners quite a few times but I can’t recall ever riding five winners,” Munce said.

He becomes just the eighth rider in Queensland to achieve that standard and he wasn’t too far away from going one better as well.

In the final event on the program Munce finished fourth on the Desleigh Forster-trained Starlin, a win there would have seen him equal the record Mick Dittman’s set at Eagle Farm in November 1977.

Highlighting just how much pain he caused the bookies are the list of prices associated wiht his winners:

Run Royal Run ($1.24 fav), ($9), Igles Star ($2 fav), On Face Value ($2.15 fav) and Product ($2.30 fav).

The last time someone rode five winners on a single card in Queensland was Jim Byrne at Doomben in June last year.

The others on the list include Graham Cook, Len Hill, Russell Maddock, Brian York, apprentice Ivan Wernowski and Mick Pelling.

Bookies will be hoping things turn around for them when black type racing returns to Brisbane over the summer series starting this weekend.
