Mosheen has arguably the toughest task in today’s Crown Oaks despite being one of the top picks in the betting markets.

Mosheen sits in second spot on the current market order for the Oaks but it’s a big gamble given the preparation she’s had.

While the majority of these horses came through the Wakeful Stakes, the traditional Crown Oaks lead in race, Mosheen’s journey was very different.

She contested the Myer Classic on Saturday, finishing 6th over a distance of just 1600m.

It’s a full 900m jump to the Oaks distance meaning trainer Robert Smerdon needs to work plenty of his magic.

On class alone she’s still a top rater with punters but Smerdon admits this wasn’t her race until the withdrawal of Atlantic Jewel.

“We always had this race on the radar but we weren’t going to it if Atlantic Jewel was there,” he said.

While none of these horses are proven over the trip, Mosheen is surely the biggest query, especially after she raced quite aggressively in the Myer.

“She was very keen, we’ve taken the blinkers off and put the winkers on her..put a tongue tie on,” Smerdon said.

“I hope those two gear changes will see her race in a more relaxed fashion.

“If she doesn’t switch off and relax she won’t run the trip.

“I guess we don’t know whether she’ll stay or not.”

While on paper everyone agrees there’s simply no clear leader, Smerdon has a feeling that in the end it might not pan out that way.

“Quite often you see a situation where everyone makes the same analysis and a number of them push forward as a consequence,” he said.

Dowager Queen is favourite for the race with Mosheen the second pick and Wakeful Stakes surprise runner up Rahveel in third.
