Gai Waterhouse’s Golden Slipper team is becoming clearer and who will ride her top chances has been confirmed ahead of the $3.5 million glamour race at Rosehill on April 6.

Tommy Berry was aboard when Overreach soared into Slipper favouritism with a six-length win in the Widden Stakes and he will continue his association with the filly.

Overreach heads a trio of gallopers from the Waterhouse stable who have announced themselves as contenders for the premier two-year-old race along with Sweet Idea and Whittington.

Jim Cassidy partnered Sweet Idea for the first time when she toughed out a win in the Silver Slipper and he was confirmed for the big day earlier this week.

Sweet Idea will head into the Golden Slipper as one of the most experienced horses in the field, having impressed with two wins and three minor placings to begin her career including a runner-up finish in the $2 million Magic Millions Classic.

Whittington pressed his Slipper claims with a strong win in the Lonhro Plate at Warwick Farm on Saturday and Waterhouse’s number one jockey Nash Rawiller was quick to put his hand up to maintain the ride.

Rawiller will attempt to score back-to-back wins in the world’s richest juvenile race after piloting Pierro to victory last year.

Waterhouse admits the fillies have the edge on the colts heading into the Golden Slipper but sung the praises of Whittington in her blog earlier this week.

“I know a good one when I see one,” Waterhouse said.

“Whittington is fresh and he has not yet had the edge taken off him.”

Outside of the Waterhouse stable, one the top chances is Victorian filly Villa Verde who will have her first Sydney start in the Reisling Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday week.

Michael Rodd was aboard for two undefeated spring starts and will keep the job for her autumn campaign.
