Toby Edmonds currently has the favourite for the Magic Millions Stayers Cup this Saturday in talented four-year-old Emvoss.

Emvoss has won four of his nine race starts and is widely tipped to take out this weekend’s $170,000 race.

It will be the fifth race for Emvoss this preparation and trainer Toby Edmonds feels that everything has come together perfectly ahead of the race.

“He’s had the right preparation I feel,” Edmonds said.

Emvoss won his first two race starts this campaign before finishing third in his most recent two starts.

Edmonds believes his third placing behind Kontiki Park in the Listed Bernborough Handicap last start came down to some bad luck.

“He was just a little bit unlucky at the top of the straight,” he said.

Emvoss has been allocated a full five kilograms less weight than Kontiki Park in this weekend’s Stayers Cup and will carry 54 kilograms.

“That’s a big turnaround for us,” Edmonds said.

“If our horse is good enough he’ll win.”

The Testa Rossa gelding will be dropping back to 1,200 metres in the Stayers Cup after running over a mile last start.

“I’m pretty sure it’s not an issue,” Edmonds said of the drop in distance.

“He shouldn’t have any trouble.”

While Edmonds looks to win a Magic Millions feature with Emvoss, he is also looking towards the future with new stable acquisition Essington.

Edmonds received the five-year-old after his previous trainer, Darryl Hansen, was banned from training due to two of his horses, one being Essington, producing positive swabs on race day.

His new trainer is confident that Essington will thrive in his new environment.

“In his work the other day he was quite competitive with his partner and that’s why he’s such a good horse,” the trainer said.

“He just went out in company with the partner for Mark Kavanagh’s two-year-old and worked quite good beside it.”

Essignton has won 10 of his 21 race starts and earned more than $260,000 in prize money.
