A light weight, a fit horse and a perfect ride from Luke Nolen. That was the recipe for providing Broken with the biggest win of his career in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) at Flemington today.

The Darren Weir-trained gelding was largely ignored in betting but that didn’t stop him producing a flying finish.

With just 54kg on his back, the seven-year-old was expertly tucked away with cover until the last possible moment before an explosive final 100m saw him run over the top of Temple Of Boom and Cavallo Nero.

While Weir was delighted with the result, he said beating home a field that featured three Group 1 winners didn’t come as a surprise.

“The horse has been racing terrifically without luck,” Weir told TVN.

“He loves the straight and the ground was perfect.”

Weir didn’t hold back in his praise for Nolen who rode precisely to trainer instruction.

“It was a perfect ride,” Weir said.

“I just said ‘you’ve got to get a bit of cover and just wait for as long as you can, as wide as you can.’ And he [Luke] produced.”

Today’s victory was Broken’s first at Group level, making it by far the biggest highlight of his 34 starts as a racehorse.

Weir is unsure where the consistent galloper’s next start lies but indicated his campaign is definitely not over yet.

“I don’t really know [what’s next] but I guess we’ll head to a similar sort of race. But we’ve got the main one,” he said.

Queensland sprinter Temple Of Boom produced a bold effort for second and was only a half-head from claiming the race he won two years ago.
