Robbie Laing’s explosive two year old Boomwaa is set to take on the older sprinters in the Group 1 $500,000 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) at Flemington on February 15.

Boomwaa is already a winner over the 1000m down the Flemington straight and that has tempted Laing to take on the more seasoned sprinters at weight for age.

The speedy two year old scored by three lengths over the Melbourne Cup Carnival in the Group 3 $150,000 The Hong Kong Jockey Club Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) at Flemington on November 9.

Boomwaa will only be asked to carry 46kg under the weight for age scale for the two year olds and Laing has narrowed down his search for a lightweight jockey to two, Dean Yendall or Dean Holland.

“Yes he will run and the rider will be one of the Deans – Yendall or Holland. I haven’t made up my mind yet,” Laing told Racing Network today.

“He’s a very fast horse and with just 46kgs he might be hard to catch.

“Two-year-olds have a good record in this race on the rare occasions they have run in it.”

Laing hasn’t ruled out a start in the Group 1 $1m Sportingbet Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield the week after the Black Caviar Lightning, but opted out of a run in Saturday’s Blue Diamond Stakes traditional lead up, the Group 3 $150,000 Sportingbet Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) (1100m) at Caulfield.

Boomwaa has returned to Melbourne after a two run campaign in Sydney where the Mutawaajid two year old ran second to the Gai Waterhouse trained Fighting Sun over 1100m at Rosehill on January 4 then ran second again as favourite to Peggy Jean in the $250,000  Inglis Classic (1200m) at Randwick on January 18.
