He’s already the best in the west but can Perth’s sprinting sensation Barakey match it with the big guns in Melbourne?

Time will tell but one thing is certain. He’ll be there.

The unbeaten gelding successfully ticked the final box ahead of his Melbourne trip at Belmont Park on Tuesday when cruising to his second comfortable trial win in two weeks.

Flight arrangements are not yet confirmed for the sprinting sensation but he has already booked his ticket into both the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 23 and the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1000m) at Flemington on March 9.

While most of the autumn hype will surround Australia’s unbeaten superstar of the turf Black Caviar, Barakey has his own flawless record to protect.

The son of Key Business has chalked up 11 straight wins in Perth including beating a number of east-coast travellers in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot in November.

His talents have grown too big for his home town, with big weight allocations in the west forcing Taylor to head east to compete at the top tier at the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.

But that doesn’t mean the Barakey camp shouldn’t be confident and Taylor believes his charge will be at the top of his game when he steps out at Caulfield in February.

“He had a nice freshen up and then had five weeks up to his trial last week,” Taylor told RSN.

“It’ll be either next week or the week after he’ll arrive in Melbourne.

“He’ll be pretty close to it [100 per cent] when he gets there.”

Racing Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter revealed this morning Barakey is likely to carry 54kg in the Newmarket.
