Rank outsider Famous Seamus causes huge boilover in winning the Group 1 $400,000 Bundaberg Distilling Co. BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben today.

Famous Seamus ($21) finished too strongly down the centre of the track to beat the fast finishing Spirit Of Boom ($5.50) and odds on favourite Buffering($1.75).

The BTC Cup was meant to give the Robert Heathcote trained Buffering his first Group 1 win in front of his home crowd but the plan didn’t go as predicted when the six year old was slow to leave the barriers then Damian Browne had to use a little bit of petrol to let him slide up outside the leader Tiger Tees.

Tiger Tees and Buffering matched motors on the home turn with Browne urging the favourite to the front at the 300m before in-form jockey Ryan Wiggins brought Famous Seamus from the tail of the field to overpower the leaders with Spirit Of Boom also hitting the line hard to nose out Buffering for second.

Even though Famous Seamus was sent out the $21 outsider of the seven horse field, winning trainer Noel Mayfield-Smith was full of confidence heading into the weight for age Group 1.

“No one believed in this horse. They thought I was off me tree,” Mayfield-Smith said.

“I was very confident. I’ve seen a lot of good horses and I’ve had a couple. And this one was like it at the start.”

“He had everything to suit him, he had a good gate, the ground was reasonably well. You know that’s what he is.”

Mayfield-Smith said today’s win was a just reward for Famous Seamus who has had a trouble free preparation.

“Always been good, no problem at all.”

Wiggins has been in the zone all day and his first Group 1 win on Famous Seamus was his third winner on the day.

The popular local jockey scored in the first race on the day for Robert Heathcote on Magic In Motion in the 1350m Fillies And Mares Handicap and followed that up with a win on Pretty Pins for John Thompson in the Group 3 $125,000 Landfill Logistics Chairman’s Handicap (2000m).

“I couldn’t believe how well I was going,” Wiggins said.

“Everything was just going to plan. I didn’t even pull the stick on the horse, he just did it all for me. Credit to Noel.”

“There was plenty of speed in the race, so that all worked out.”

Famous Seamus, Spirit Of Boom and Buffering are certain to clash again in a fortnight in the Group 1 $650,000 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10,000 (1350m) and possibly again in the Group 1 $1.36m AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 7.

Mayfield-Smith has tasted Group 1 success before during the Brisbane Winter Carnival and saddled up Landsighting to win the 2000 Stradbroke Handicap.
