The 2018 WA Guineas is a Group 2 contest held in the state’s capital of Perth annually during their prestigious summer carnival. It’s the biggest carnival hosted at Ascot racecourse and as such all the very best local talent is on show as well as a few interstate champions as well.
The Western Australian Guineas itself is a 1600m set weight contest. It’s for three year olds only and worth a handy [cf prize_money] in prize money. It is the first and the best three year old Group race of the carnival and as such horses are primed to run their best by the time this race jumps.
Depending on the quality of horse the sky is the limit for the good performers from the WA Guineas. The very best may try their luck at Group 1 level but they would want to be good if they are to step up to open class level ins something like the Railway Stakes.
For an easier assignment they could stay at Group 2 level in something like the Lee Steere Classic, another three year old race but over a 1400m distance.
It’s unusual for a three year old from the East coast to make the long trip to Perth given the fact the carnival is so late in the year. The best horses from Sydney and Melbourne would usually be spelling after a tough spring carnival preparation.
That’s not to say there the local talent is worthy though and the WA Guineas is always a fantastic contest.
Tip The Pro got up in 1994 while Royal Retrieve conquered the field in 2001.
The only horse to go under a minute and 35 seconds was So Dashing in 1990.
Vows set a time of one minute 35 flat back in 1991, that mark not equalled until Clueless Angel in 2009.
In 2010 Playing God reigned supreme and after that he embarked on a relatively successful trip to the Eastern States where he raced at Group 1 level.
