The 2025 Doncaster Mile at Randwick on Saturday promises a thrilling contest, with a high-caliber field vying for the prestigious Group 1 $4 million prize.

Gringotts

Gringotts is one of the best in Doncaster Mile 2025 betting in Sydney this weekend. Steve Hart.

The race, a highlight of Day 1 of The Championships, has attracted a typically competitive lineup, reflected in the open betting markets at Ladbrokes.

“Gringotts is one of the best in 2025 Doncaster Mile betting after his lead-up George Ryder win,” a racing analyst from Races.com.au reported.

Gringotts ($6.50) heads the current Doncaster Mile odds, with Ciaron Maher‘s five-year-old gelding aiming for consecutive victories.

His recent triumph in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes, where he narrowly defeated Fangirl, has solidified his position as a leading contender.

Gringotts will attempt to replicate Winx’s 2016 feat by completing the George Ryder/Doncaster Mile double.

Maher, seeking his first Doncaster Mile victory, will saddle Gringotts, who will carry 55.5kg.

The gelding boasts an impressive 1600m record, with four wins from five starts at the distance.

Tommy Berry, aiming for his second Doncaster win, retains the ride from barrier six.

Linebacker ($6.50) is another strong contender, sharing favouritism with Gringotts at time of publish.

The John O’Shea & Tom Charlton-trained gelding will carry a light 49kg and will be ridden by Zac Lloyd from barrier 14.

He aims to become the eighth three-year-old to win the Doncaster Mile since 2005, following Celestial Legend’s victory in 2024.

Linebacker’s recent Randwick Guineas win over Broadsiding, who subsequently won the Rosehill Guineas, has boosted his credentials.

Godolphin‘s Tom Kitten ($7.50) is also highly regarded, after an impressive All-Star Mile victory at Flemington over Mr Brightside two back.

The James Cummings-trained four-year-old will carry 55.5kg and will be ridden by Ben Melham from barrier one.

Maher’s Another Wil ($9.50) will carry the top weight of 56.5kg and will be ridden by Jamie Melham from barrier 18.

Despite the wide draw, which has been overcome by past winners like Brutal (2019) and Mr Brightside (2022), he remains a genuine winning hope at single figures in an open market.

Royal Patronage ($8.50), trained by Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott, will start from one of the outermost barriers.

The import, who won the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes, has strong form lines and co-trainer Waterhouse looks to surpass her father Tommy Smith with an eighth Doncaster win this weekend.

Chris Waller, with six previous Doncaster Mile wins, will saddle five runners, with Firestorm ($9) being his best chance.

The Kiwi-bred mare comes off a Group 1 Coolmore Classic second.

Potential value contenders include Just Folk ($26), trained by Gavin Bedggood on the quick back-up, and Iowna Merc ($51), trained by Bjorn Baker.

“Some potential value Doncaster Mile contenders this year include Gavin Bedggood‘s evergreen eight-year-old Just Folk ($26) and Bjorn Baker‘s ultra-consistent Group 2 Ajax Stakes winner Iowna Merc ($51),” a racing expert from Races.com.au stated.

The 2025 Doncaster Mile is scheduled for Randwick Race 8 at 4:35pm (AEDT) on Saturday.
