The 2018 Caulfield Sprint is a Group 2 event held a couple of weeks into October every year during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. As the name suggests, it’s held at Caulfield Racecourse and horses are weighted under handicap conditions.
Also as the name suggests the race is a short one, run over 1100m meaning the race can be lost right out of the barriers. There is $200,000 in prize money on offer for the top performers in the race which is run on the final day of the Melbourne Racing Club’s three day carnival. It’s usually scheduled in the lead up to the Group 1 Caulfield Cup on the same card.
There are an abundance of short events held around a similar time to the Caulfield Sprint but the race can usually still attract a quality field of horses.
One of the Group 2 events which could be used as a lead up race is the Gilgai Stakes while the top horses could even come from Group 1 level in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes earlier in the year.
There have been some fantastic horses to run in the Caulfield Sprint over the years with many a memorable event.
Toledo won back to back races in 1997 and 1998 to become the best performing horse to ever run in the Caulfield Sprint.
Other good wins have come from the mighty Rubitano in 2002 and Jet Spur in 2005.
The win by Jet Spur was also the quickest time recorded but he still fell just short of slipping below the 1:02 barrier.
