Another Wil Leads Memsie Stakes Market as Fangirl Makes Caulfield Debut

Star mare Fangirl will finally begin her spring campaign, making a delayed return in this weekend’s Group 1 $750,000 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield.

The $10 million earner was a late scratching from last weekend’s Winx Stakes at Randwick due to the heavy track, a race won in historic fashion by her stablemate Via Sistina.

The Chris Waller trained seven-year-old mare will now make her highly anticipated Caulfield debut, where she is listed as the second favourite at $5 in the latest Memsie Stakes odds online at Ladbrokes.

Fangirl boasts an impressive record over 1400m (5 wins from 9 starts) and has a strong first-up record (4 wins from 9 starts).

Despite her stellar credentials, she faces stiff competition, with the Ciaron Maher-trained Another Wil leading the betting at $4.50.

The six-year-old is a Caulfield specialist, having won four of his six starts at the track, including the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes in the autumn.

His record at the 1400m distance is also impeccable (5 wins from 7 starts), and he is a proven first-up performer.

The race also features the return of the fan-favourite veteran Mr Brightside, who is aiming for a third consecutive run in the Memsie.

The eight-year-old won the race two years ago and finished a narrow second last year.

After a failed Hong Kong campaign, he has returned in terrific order and is showing a great zest for racing, with a current quote of $5.50.

Another key contender is Tony Gollan’s Doomben Cup champion Antino, who finished fourth in the Memsie last year and returns to Caulfield for the first time since his dominant win in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap.

Rounding out the single-figure chances are the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Tom Kitten ($7), a winner of the All-Star Mile, and Matt Laurie’s flying mare Treasurethe Moment ($6.50), who enters the race on an eight-race winning streak from last prep and is unbeaten at both the track and distance.
