Chris Waller has both Royal Descent and Amicus in the 2015 Myer Classic field and the leading trainer is happy with both mares ahead of the Group 1 event at Flemington on Saturday.
Royal Descent started her 2015 Spring Racing Carnival campaign win a win in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on August 22 and she was placed in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m), Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) before she finished at the tail of the field in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 17.
Waller said that nothing went right for Royal Descent in the Caulfield Cup, but he believes that she has bounced back well from the tough run and is well-placed to return to winning form when she returns to mares company in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m).
“Royal Descent comes back from a Caulfield Cup failure, but it was good to see Glen Boss shut her down as they came into the straight,” Waller said.
“She wasn’t put under any pressure once he knew she was beaten and she has pulled up well.
“She is very bright and is bucking her brains off as we say.
“She is one of the best milers in the country and she is racing against her own sex at weight-for-age level.”
Royal Descent is joined in the 2015 Myer Classic field by stablemate Amicus, who has had mixed form during her spring preparation.
Amicus returned to the races with a fast-finishing win in the Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1300m) at Royal Randwick on August 22 and she beat a stack of quality mares to take out the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on September 12, but she failed to fire in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on September 26 and she produced another poor effort in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) at the same venue on October 17.
Waller admits that he is frustrated Amicus has drawn another wide gate, but he remains hopeful that jockey Blake Shinn will be able to find some cover in the early stages of 2015 Myer Classic, which will give the four-year-old the chance to hit the line strongly.
“She did win at Flemington at her last winning start from a similar gate and she should get a bit of cover and be able to work into the race,” Waller said.
Royal Descent is currently available at 2015 Myer Classic odds of $5.50 with Ladbrokes, whole Amicus is one of the outsiders of the field at a quote of $26..
