Sangster has taken out the Victoria Derby at Flemington

Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman made it back to back Victoria Derby wins with another Kiwi connection when Sangster won the Flemington $1.5m Group 1 feature.

One of the oldest races on the Australian calendar fell to a young trainer from Cambidge, Trent  Busuttin.

It was a matter of  staying prowess defeating class as race favourite Manawanui (6th)  failed to stay the 2500m.

The Derby was run at a slow speed when jockey Nash Rawiller used Niagara from barrier 18 to lead the race and then attempt to stack up the field.

The Leon Macdonald trained galloper Perfect Punch refused to settle at the back of the field and ran wide at the first turn causing severe interference to Induna and Eagle Command.

Clare Lindop on Perfect Punch moved around the field when Rawiller applied the brakes and the field behind the pair stacked up with horses three and four wide.

One of them out three wide was Sangster worse than midfield with cover.

Before the turn Niagara kicked away and Manawanui who settled in the top six moved up under a hold.

Bowman had Sangster sweeping around the field and at the turn it  looked like he would fight it out with Manawanui.

Manawanui started to struggle at the 200m while Induna who continually found trouble in the race moved in contention.

The Peter Snowden trained galloper was giving Sangster three lengths and failed narrowly to run it down.

Sangster $13 defeated the unlucky Induna $5.50 by a head with Sabrage $16 a further length and a quarter away third.

Sabrage was outsprinted before the turn and fought on well as did Zabeelionaire and Isopach who both made ground from near the tail.

Bowman, who won the Derby on the defunct Lion Tamer for Murray Baker last year, played his cards well.

“I know in work he (Sangster) can be a bit keen and I thought if he jumps well I would go forward,” Bowman said.

“But he really took a hold so I thought I better settle him and I did.

“I was three wide with cover, the horse I was following dropped back in my face so I had to make use of him from the 600m.

“It took a bit out of the tank and I was a bit concerned because he was having a look around.”

“But I knew the distance would suit this guy.”

Sangster was the unlucky runner in its previous run in the Norman Robinson Stakes when apprentice James Macdonald took off too early and was caught by Sabrage.

Busuttin, son of legendary New Zealand trainer Paddy, saw the justice.

“It is fantastic, I can’t describe it,” Busuttin said.

“We set him for the race three months ago.

“We were three deep and Hughie said before the race we don’t want to be in front before the 200m but he was in front at the turn.

“I didn’t want to yell at the 100m but the minute I did Induna came after us and I thought here we go again.

“It has been frustrating all the way through but we picked up the big one.”
