With the hype surrounding yesterday’s Royal Wedding in England it was only time before a horse of the same name would appear on the racing scene.
However, it is unexpected when a horse named Royal Wedding wins a race on the very same day.
Royal Wedding won at Fontwell Park Racecourse in England just hours after William and Kate’s nuptials.
The four to one shot won the hurdles race by a phenomenal 12 lengths ahead of the next horse, Take A Mile.
Royal Wedding’s trainer, Nick Gifford, was thrilled that his horse was able to come through with the goods on the special day.
“It’s been the plan to run for about two months and we are delighted it’s all worked out,” Gifford said.
“I’m delighted and a bit relieved he won after we’ve had so much publicity.
“We just didn’t want him to do anything stupid like fall at the first (fence) or anything like that.”
While punters were over the moon with the result, bookmakers were certainly feeling the pinch after the race.
“Thousands of people placed bets on Royal Wedding, and the bookies will be paying out millions as a result,” said David Stevens, who represents the bookmaker Coral.
“Royal Wedding backers are over the moon,” said Ladbrokes bookmaker David Williams.
“The horse began to drift in the betting market but the royal gods had other ideas.
“Loyal royalists who kept the faith have scooped a small fortune.”
Royal Wedding’s win was fitting in more ways than one, with the Fontwell Park Racecourse being where Queen Elizabeth II had her first win as a race horse owner back in 1949.
