Rain Dampens Luckygray’s Memsie Stakes Chances

Rain could again hinder Western Australian talent Luckygray as he attempts to break his Melbourne maiden.

Luckygray placed fourth in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield last Saturday on a track that was rated a Heavy-10.

With the Bradbury’s Luck gelding not suited to rain-affected ground, his effort was deeply appreciated by trainer Gino Poletti.

Poletti believes the track deteriorated beyond the measurement of a Heavy 10, and was impressed with Luckygray’s gutsy effort.

“The local trainers reckoned the track was a heavy 14 not 10,” Poletti said.

“He was never going to be able to make up ground from behind on a track like that but I was very happy with his effort.”

Luckygray will now look towards the Group 2 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield this weekend in an attempt to claim his first spring racing carnival victory.

The five-year-old will have to contend with what is likely to be another wet track, with rain forecast to fall throughout Melbourne this week.

Poletti revealed that Luckygray would run in the Memsie Stakes despite the probable rain as long as he was fully recovered from his last start.

“At this stage the Memsie is the race we are looking at and we will see how he comes through it,” Poletti said.

Luckygray is so far doing well at his temporary Melbourne home as he looks towards the big feature races of the Melbourne spring.

He has already has one Group 1 title to his name, winning the Group 1 Railway Stakes at Ascot Racecourse on protest last November.

The grey gelding has continued to prove his talent in Perth, winning all three of his Group starts this preparation prior to travelling to the east coast.

Luckygray has won ten of his 14 race starts and accrued more than $1.14 million in prize money during his career.
