The 2017 Sandown Stakes is a Group 2 contest held at Sandown Racecourse every year at the end of the Melbourne spring racing carnival in November. The race is a quality handicap and worth $150,000 to the winners.
It is held on Zipping Classic day, the biggest card hosted by the Melbourne Racing Club at Sandown every year.
It’s run over a trip of 1500m and held alongside other feature events including the Group 1 Zipping Classic, Group 2 Sandown Guineas, Group 3 Eclipse Stakes, Group 3 Summoned Stakes, Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes and three listed events, one of which is the Sandown Cup.
The Sandown Stakes was known as the ‘Alannah & Madeline Foundation Stakes’ in 2011, and has also been known as the Race-Tech Stakes.
Being the final black type race during the spring carnival in Melbourne over the sprint / mile trip this event does usually have a good level of participation.
Condition is the key going into it and horses at the end of a long prep may struggle thanks to the long and uphill home straight.
That means fresher horse can be suited as well as those that are genuine milers more than sprinters.
Recent form is also a key performance indicator and can be more of a guide than simply what grade of race they contested previously.
Previous Sandown Stakes winners include Titanic Jack in 2005, Chasm in 2008, Larry’s Never Late in 2010 and Under The Eiffel in 2011.
