The Group 3 2017 How Now Stakes is run at Melbourne’s Caulfield Racecourse in September each year. The race takes place as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
The How Now Stakes is worth [cf “prize money”] in prize money and run over a distance of 1,200 metres. Run under set weights plus penalty conditions, the race is open to mares aged four years and older only. As a result, the How Now Stakes tends to attract a top quality field each year, with highly experienced mares from around the country targeting the event as part of their spring campaign. Often, Group 1 winning horses will contest the How Now Stakes.
The How Now Stakes was first run in 1999 when it was won by Snippets’ Lass. At that time, it was awarded Listed status and was not elevated to a Group 3 race until 2003. The How Now Stakes has been known by a variety of different names since its inception, including the Cranbourne Daihatsu Stakes, Dairy Farmers’ Mile Stakes and Dubai International Stakes. It is currently referred to as the Ladbrokes Odds Boost Stakes.
The How Now Stakes is often contested by horses that have experienced success in races earlier in the spring carnival, such as the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes or the Group 3 Cockram Stakes. Those mares that perform well in the How Now Stakes may then go on to run in races like the Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes or the Group 3 Champagne Stakes at Moonee Valley.
The How Now Stakes is run on Underwood Stakes Day and shares its day with the Group 1 Underwood Stakes and Group 3 Naturalism Stakes.
Notable How Now Stakes winners include Taimana (2002), Miss Judgement (2007), Valentine Miss (2010) and Sister Madly (2011).
