Stand in trainer James Ferguson has declared that Qewy is in fine shape heading into the Listed $150,000 Ladbrokes Sandown Cup (3200m) at Sandown on Saturday.
Godolphin’s English trainer Charlie Appleby has returned to England but was on hand to see Qewy run a gallant fourth to Almandin in the Group 1 $6m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 1.
Ferguson has been overseeing the Appleby Team at the Werribee International Horse Centre and has reported that Qewy has fully recovered from the hard run in the Melbourne Cup.
“He’s come out of the Melbourne Cup very, very well. He’s in absolutely fantastic shape,” James Ferguson said.
“In every run here he’s exceeded our expectations and to run fourth in the Melbourne Cup was a fantastic thrill for the whole team.”
“The 3200m trip suits, as he showed in the Cup, and he looks capable of controlling this race.”
Melbourne Cup winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy was aboard Qewy for his win in the Group 3 $300,000 Geelong Cup (2400m) at Geelong on October 19 and is back on the English stayer in the Sandown Cup.
Qewy has drawn barrier one in the field that has been reduced to ten runners with the early scratching of the Robbie Laing trained Cinnamon Carter.
The Sandown Cup market order at Ladbrokes.com.au has Qewy s the $2.25 favourite ahead of the Danny O’Brien trained De Little Engine at $4.80 and Chris Waller’s Murphy’s Delight at $8.
De Little Engine moves into barrier six with Damian Lane taking over from Chad Schofield who has been aboard the six year old for his last two starts for a fourth to Oceanographer in the Group 3 $300,000 Lexus Stakes (2500m) at Flemington on October 29 and a fourth to Francis Of Assisi in the Group 3 $300,000 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) at Flemington last Saturday.
Craig Newitt takes over from Hugh Bowman on Murphy’s Delight who will jump from barrier eight if there are no more scratchings and the seven year old will appreciate the drop in weight to 54kg after carrying 58kg when sixth in a 2800m BenchMark 96 Handicap at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.
