Star Mare Treasurethe Moment Dominates Memsie Stakes

The superstar mare Treasurethe Moment has made a breathtaking return to racing, stamping herself as a major spring contender with a dominant first-up victory in the 2025 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield.

In a performance that delighted racegoers, the four-year-old daughter of Alabama Express extended her remarkable winning streak to nine consecutive races with a powerful display against a star-studded field.

The win marked a fourth career Group 1 victory for the mare, who last season became the first filly in two decades to complete the VRC Oaks and Australian Oaks double.

Trainer Matt Laurie was full of praise for his star, who defeated a field of older, multiple Group 1 winners at weight-for-age for the first time.

“One of the best Memsie fields we’ve seen in some time. I wasn’t expecting to be coming here and winning, but she had come up very well and to win in such fashion, is pretty incredible,” Laurie said post-race.

Jockey Damian Lane, who celebrated his 20th Victorian Group 1 win, gave the mare a perfect ride.

“She was great,” Lane said.

“She’s come back in really good order. You’re never really sure. Trackwork, jump-outs, they’re a different kind of pressure, but she’s jumping up to the big boys and girls now. We were hoping what we were seeing in her trackwork, and trials would translate into today and it did. It was a little unexpected the way the race was run… I was in a bit of a sticky spot on the corner, but luckily enough I was able to take it, and she was electrifying.”

The race had some pre-race drama with Pinstriped proving difficult to load, which resulted in the scratching of All-Star Mile winner Tom Kitten.

From the inside gate, Treasurethe Moment settled midfield as last year’s winner Pinstriped set a solid tempo.

As the field straightened for home, Lane found a perfect split on the rail, and Treasurethe Moment exploded with a scintillating turn of foot to put the race away. She cruised to the line with 2.5 lengths to spare over the old warhorse Mr Brightside, who ran a brave second.

“Super to see him back,” jockey Craig Williams said of Mr Brightside. “The Hayes boys were always happy with where he was. I sat on him his last jumpout and we were confident that he would be able to come back as he always has. The winner was exceptional today, she drew the right spot, got the right run from Damian Lane and was very dominant, but my horse was great, and we know we’ve got more wriggle room with him which is very exciting going into the spring.”

In a surprise third, the Chris Waller-trained Buckaroo flashed home from last to complete the trifecta at odds of 60/1.

With her dominant win, Treasurethe Moment has firmed into second favourite at $4 for the Ladbrokes Cox Plate, a race Laurie has confirmed is a major spring target.

Laurie has also indicated that a potential Caulfield Cup run is still on the table for the star mare.
