There would be few racing experts that doubt Patinack Farm’s three-year-old filly Peron is a Group 1 horse in the making.

But whether her opportunity in the top grade comes this season could be determined this weekend when she lines up in the Listed $100,000 Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) at Ipswich.

Trainer John Thompson flagged his intentions to tackle Saturday week’s Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) after her last-start Doomben win but it is likely she will need a prizemoney boost in order to make the field.

“She’s a three-year-old taking on older horses. She’s got ability, she’s going places,” Thompson said of her win in the Class 6 Plate on May 25.

This preparation the speedy chestnut is two from two against the older horses, having also put her rivals away with a sharp turn of foot at the Gold Coast early last month.

But despite a stunning early career record of five wins from six starts, Peron has collected just $93,000 in prizemoney.

With a classy field of fillies and mares already being spruiked as targeting the Tatt’s Tiara, a win this weekend would give her chances of making the field a much-needed lift.

The daughter of Husson forms part of a full field in the Gai Waterhouse Classic and has drawn favourably in barrier six for her first assignment at Ipswich’s often tricky tight-turning track.

Among those lining up to take on Peron are Victorian filly Love For Ransom, Bright Shadow Handicap runner-up Sharnee Rose and Darley-owned mare Classics.
