French jockey Gerald Mosse will get the chance to pay back connections of Americain for giving him a second chance if the former Melbourne Cup winner lines up in the Caulfield Cup (2400m) tomorrow.

Americain could still be scratched due to concerns over a firm track but if he does start it will be the first time Mosse has ridden him in Australia since he ran second to Manighar in the Group 1  BMW (2400m) in April.

Mosse positioned the entire three wide in the BMW despite options to sit outside the leader or drop back causing part-owner Kevin Bamford to declare “he will never ride the horse again.”

“The horse was magnificent. Stephanie (Nigge, the horse’s personal attendant) and David (Hayes) had done a wonderful job, he couldn’t have been any better. And you get some cowboy who in a minute and a half destroys all that hard work,” Bamford told the Daily Telegraph in April.

But connections have obviously forgiven the BMW ride, with Mosse riding Americain in the Prix Kergolay in August and also given the job of piloting him in his third Melbourne Cup campaign.

Mosse was in the saddle when the seven-year-old defeated Maluckyday and So You Think in the 2010 Melbourne Cup and was also aboard for his fourth-place finish last year.

If Americain does make it to the starting line for his first Caulfield Cup tomorrow, he will have to break history in order to be successful.

No original topweight has won the Caulfield Cup since the first running of the event in 1879 and Americain joins Dunaden with the topweight allocation of 58kg tomorrow.

Americain is a $26.00 chance to win the $2.5 million Caulfield Cup for which he has drawn barrier 19.
