The Godolphin camp is not too concerned that It’s Somewhat has drawn towards the outside of the field in the Group 1 $1m Magic Millions-Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot in Perth on Saturday.
It’s Somewhat came up with the eleven marble in the final field of fifteen but assistant trainer Paul Reid can see the Doncaster Mile winner with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle sliding across from the wide gate to take up a handy position.
“That’s OK,” Reid told The West Australian.
“If he drew inside he’d have to do a bit of work to lead or sit outside the lead.
“That will allow him to come across under his own steam.”
It’s Somewhat had a light Melbourne Spring Carnival preparation with two placings from three starts, his latest a third behind Tosen Stardom and Happy Clapper in the Group 1 $2m Emirates Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on the last day of the four day Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Trainer James Cummings has since given It’s Somewhat a barrier trail, which he won, over 1200m at Belmont on November 27.
“He put on a little bit of weight travelling over and he settled in really well,” Reid said.
“Damian (Lane) was very happy with him. He’s pulled up very well and that will just sharpen him up nicely.
“We expect him to be running very well in the Kingston Town.”
It’s Somewhat is on the second line of betting at $5 for the Kingston Town Classic with Ladbrokes.com.au behind the $3.30 favourite Black Heart Bart.
The Darren Weir trained Black Heart Bart has drawn the rails and will be ridden again by regular rider Brad Rawiller.
On the third line of betting at $6 is the lightly weighted local filly Perfect Jewel who has drawn just worse than midfield at nine with Perth’s leading jockey William Pike in the saddle.
Early betting for the 2017 Kingston Town Classic at Ladbrokes.com.au: $3.30 Black Heart Bart, $5 It’s Somewhat, $6 Perfect Jewel, $8 Tom Melbourne, $10 Achernar’s Star, $11 Life Less Ordinary, $21 All Our Roads, Great Shot, Pounamu, $26 Material Man, Money Maher, $41 Royal Star, $51 Silverstream, Gatting, $101 Cosmic Storm.
