Seven year old Grey Monarch added black type to his long and successful career when winning the Listed Carbine Club of WA Stakes (1400m).
Having his 52nd race start, the grey who has won every year since his two-year-old year in 2007, took his prizemoney to over $400,000 at Ascot today.
Jockey Troy Turner enjoyed a perfect run behind the leader Wolfe Dreams, who was set an easy speed in front by Peter Hall.
The pace of the race gave the advatange to the front runners and they took it whole heartedly.
Turner took Grey Monarch off the fence at the turn as Ken’s Double, who sat second, was the first beaten.
Our Ol’ Fella, from fourth, moved into the race at the 200m and joined Wolfe Dreams and Grey Monarch.
At the 100m, the run of Wolfe Dreams ended and Grey Monarch found a half length and held it to the line.
The best run in the race was that of Dempsey who settled last and nodded out Our Ol Fella for second.
The run of General Albert is best forgotten as he was wide throughout.
The win was a good fillup for trainer Ivan Haggerty who handles about 20 horses at his Bullsbrook stable.
