Chris Waller‘s accomplished Kiwi import, Movin Out, has been installed as the one to beat in Saturday’s 2025 Australasian Oaks at Morphettville, holding favouritism in the early markets.

Waller, aiming for his third victory in this Group 1 classic for three-year-old fillies, saddles up Movin Out, who is currently priced at $3.80 with Ladbrokes after drawing the coveted inside barrier.

The Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival hits its stride this weekend, with Robert Sangster Stakes Day featuring a Group 1 double-header, including the $1 million Australasian Oaks over 2000m. A field of 16 promising young stayers will contest the mile and a quarter event.

Jockey Ben Melham retains the ride on Movin Out, who previously raced in New Zealand before breaking her Australian maiden status impressively last Saturday with a 2.5-length victory over a mile at Mornington.

This performance marked a significant improvement on her ninth-place finish in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) in Sydney two starts prior, suggesting she is now fit and brimming with confidence as she steps back up in class and distance.

Waller has a strong record in this race, having previously tasted success with Egg Tart (2017) and Toffee Tongue (2020). History also favours the market leaders, with the shortest-priced runner saluting seven times between 2006 and 2024, most recently with Waller’s own Toffee Tongue ($5 in 2020) and Princess Jenni ($3.30 in 2019).

The main danger according to the current Australasian Oaks odds, sitting at $4.20, is Benagil, trained by Glen Thompson. This daughter of Manhattan Rain has drawn wider out in barrier 13 and will be ridden by Mark Zahra.

Following a first-up victory over a mile at Caulfield, Benagil caught the eye with a brave second-place finish at double-figure odds in the Vinery Stud Stakes behind Treasurethe Moment on April 1st. The form from that Sydney Group 1 looks particularly strong, with the winner subsequently claiming the ATC Oaks, potentially making Benagil a key contender in this Morphettville feature.

The top half of the betting market is quite open, with two other fillies also attracting single-figure quotes. Polymnia, trained by John O’Shea & Tom Charlton, is priced at $6.50 and will be ridden by Jamie Melham from the second-widest barrier (14).

This consistent daughter of Dundeel has been in excellent form, recording four consecutive top two finishes this preparation, most recently being narrowly defeated (under half a length) by Belle Detelle in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on April 5th, over the same distance as the Oaks.

Cinch, from the Ben, Will & JD Hayes stable, is another prominent fancy at $7. This daughter of Dundeel has been touted as a potential Australasian Oaks contender throughout the season and is now chasing her fourth consecutive victory.

Bred to stay, Cinch demonstrated her staying prowess with an impressive three-length win in the Group 3 Tasmanian Oaks (2100m) back in February. She returned to racing with a win on April 12th at Morphettville in the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) and should relish the step up in distance again this weekend. The Auraria Stakes has proven to be a crucial lead-up race to the Australasian Oaks, producing four of the nine winners between 2012 and 2024, with Sopressa (2018) being the latest to complete the double.

Further down the betting, potential value runners include All Kinds Of Folk ($13), trained by John & Chris Ledger, who finished second in the Auraria Stakes, and Too Darn Lizzie ($15). Trained by Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott and by the in-form sire Too Darn Hot, Too Darn Lizzie, who finished third in last year’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas, comes into this race off a series of Group placings in Melbourne and possesses the class to be competitive once again.
