Glen Boss has been booked to ride Royal Descent in the 2015 Caulfield Cup and the leading hoop is bullish about the chances of the talented mare in the Group 1 event at Caulfield on Saturday.
Royal Descent has not raced over 2400 metres since she finished a credible fifth behind Fawkner in the 2013 edition of the Caulfield Cup and she has not won over the trip since her dominant victory in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) in 2012, but she has since developed into one of the most consistent mares into the country
The daughter of Redoute’s Choice started her 2015 Spring Racing Carnival campaign with a drought breaking win in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on August 22 and she finished a credible third in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick on September before she was only denied by two separate stablemates in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick on September 19 and the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 4.
Boss told Racing Ahead that he has been thrilled with the form of Royal Descent this preparation and he believes that she is a genuine winning chance in the Caulfield Cup as long as there is a little bit of give in the track.
“I am really looking forward to riding her,” Boss said.
“I honestly think that she is flying at the moment.
“It took a really good horse to beat her at Flemington and we know how good Preferment is at Flemington.
“He is a top-shelf race horse and he is probably going to be one of the horses to beat in the Melbourne Cup.
“She has only had the one run at Caulfield over a mile and a half and she ran a brave fifth.
“She is probably going a lot better than what she was then, she is a bigger, stronger mare now and I think that she is racing terrific.
“If she can get the right conditions, she is another one that probably needs a four or five, and she can get the right draw then I have her in my top five without a shadow of a doubt.
“She has put in some terrific performances this spring already and I had a look at her on Tuesday at stables on Tuesday and she just glows.
“Chris is quietly confident that she is definitely going to be running a big race on Saturday.”
